For thirty years, the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association has been hosting Art-A-Whirl, a weekend of celebrating the artists and community that make Minneapolis such a vibrant and unique place. Hosted at the various studio buildings throughout Northeast Minneapolis, you can visit the studios of painters, screenprinters, ceramicists, fiber artists and more – all mostly within walking distance.
In the 31st year of this annual tradition, NEMAA reached out to me to create the artwork to respresent the event. Previously, an artist was commissioned each year to create a piece that would be featured on the cover. This year, the NEMAA team wanted to take a more holistic approach and create a visual identity system that could be used not only for the directory, but for digital marketing, merch, and more.
While creating this design, I knew that I wanted it to feel as energetic and lively as the event itself is; I also knew that I wanted the final piece to be representative of all of the artists who participate in the weekend, from the fine artists who open their studios to the musicians performing across Northeast and the breweries hosting artists without studios of their own.
The final design reflects the diversity and energy of what is an iconic weekend in Minneapolis. It was a thrill seeing all of the pieces I designed across Northeast Minneapolis. While I sat at my table in Casket Arts Building, I was so pleased to see all of the folks carrying around the collaboration beer created by Pryes for NEMAA and featuring my artwork. In the end, the design was so successful that it helped sell out NEMAA’s t-shirt – twice.
